Getting to the root of the problem (part 2)
As you can see, I'm still smiling, but slowly going downwards...
To get the roots out, I had to work quite a way from the stump.
The only way forward was sometimes to scrape with the trowel, as the shovel was too big. Note the main tools: a bowsaw and an axe. The axe needs grinding down, as when hitting roots submerged in earth, you strike stones, and chip the fine edge. I sharpened it every day with a whetstone, and this meant a difference for approx. 10 mins. I still have the scars at the base of one thumb, and the heel of the other hand from swinging it repeatedly - the neighbours regularly came to observe what the foreign nutcase was doing, and were rewarded with copious volleys of Anglosaxon!.
