A waste of space?

One of things we have wanted to do before winter is to create space in the garage for the car, so that a) we're not so tempted to use it, and b) it'll be protected from the worst of the weather (the previous owner informed me that, since the garage isn't heated, it's usually about 8 c. above outside temp). While considering this problem, i.e. the fact that an awful lot of stuff got dumped in the garage, and tidying needed doing, I observed, through the fact that the sliders for the door were a little on the weak side, that above the garage door is a rather nice empty space. Why not kill two birds with one stone and build shelving above the garage door, and in the same go strengthen the door mechanism, I cried!





So off to the local hardware store for some lumber and metal bits and hey presto, it took shape very quickly. This was a project that didn't even need a second visit to the hardware store (a bit of a first for me!!!) I had to consider the fact that this is a frame house, so if my frame didn't get attached to the house frame it was liable to drop heavily on one's foot, causing use of swearwords in whatever my language of choice happens to be.



This explains these nice little attachments to the wall.









Here's the finished article. Not quite up to VL's works of art, but this is decidedly functional. It's also now completely full of stuff like car tyres, ski boxes, wood, the cot, and all sorts of stuff. Also, you don't notice anything when you open the garage, as it's all hidden (except that it's tidy, of course).






Here too is what it was all for - to strengthen the metal slider in the bottom of this picture. Anyone for overkill?
